Position: Product Development Engineer

Reports to: R&D Manager

Position Location: Company HQ in Suburban Philadelphia, PA

The Product Development Engineer will be responsible for major contributions to the R&D team that will take this game-changing technology platform from prototype to product. This individual will be responsible for contributing to the detailed design of various components to be incorporated within MOBILion’s products. They will also support the construction, testing, and maintenance of mechanical and electrical subsystems being developed at MOBILion. Depending on the candidate’s capabilities, responsibilities may also include operation and testing of prototype and/or product instrumentation systems for the purposes of performance benchmarking and/or reliability testing. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of executing multi-faceted engineering projects translating novel concepts into commercially viable prototypes. The Instrumentation Engineer will work closely with other scientists and engineers as well as project managers, product managers, and application scientists to ensure successful and timely execution of product development activities. The engineer will ideally be familiar with product development lifecycle processes and have experience working within a Quality Management Systems’ policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Learn SLIM technology and how to operate SLIM instruments
  • Perform detailed design of mechanical components using CAD tools
  • Support assembly and testing of prototype hardware
  • Component selection
  • Work with manufacturing and service personnel to improve quality, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability of products
  • Create test procedures and documentation to determine whether systems, subsystems, or components meet design and performance specifications
  • Work with systems engineers to create and maintain product requirement documentation
  • Develop and utilize a professional, technical, and scientific network to identify possible manufacturing, technical, and supply chain partners.
  • Working within an interdisciplinary team of engineering, applications development, and operational employees to achieve strategic, operational, and technical objectives in a manner that ensures the product performance meet customer needs
  • Understanding MOBILion’s strategic direction and contributing to those efforts wherever possible
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards and practices
  • Adhere to project plans and budgets to achieve stated goals and objectives on schedule
  • Generate, review, approve controlled documentation for all phases of development
  • Participate in technical design reviews at system or subsystem levels

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in chemistry, physics, engineering, or related field
  • Ability to work within the United States
  • Willing to report in person daily to MOBILion headquarters Chadds Ford, PA
  • At least 5 years’ experience developing prototype instrumentation
  • Knowledge of common manufacturing techniques such as machining and 3-D printing
  • Experience with vacuum systems, vacuum pumps, valves, control loops, interlocks, and software control systems
  • Accomplished Solidworks user (>2-3 years)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small to medium projects with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated track record of executing a product development plan from rudimentary lab prototype to commercial launch
  • Strong communication skills and team-based mentality
  • Strong instrumentation design skills and troubleshooting ability
  • Detail-oriented documentation-based approach to design activities

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • Advanced science or engineering degree
  • Mass spectrometry and/or ion mobility instrument development experience
  • Proficient programming skills in one or more industry standard programming languages (Python, C++, Labview, etc)
  • Experience designing and constructing basic control circuits to enable operation of electronic components
  • Experience with thermal control systems including mechanics of heat transfer, control algorithms, temperature sensors, and heater components
  • Understanding of fluid dynamics phenomena, e.g. liquid transport through tubes and gas flow in vacuum systems.
