Position: R&D Manager

Reports to: Director of R&D

Position Location: Company HQ in Suburban Philadelphia, PA

We are seeking an energetic, motivated, and experienced R&D Manager to join our fast-growing company. MOBILion is a well-financed instrumentation company expanding our team to support the launch of our product and development of additional products in our R&D pipeline. Our best-in-class ion mobility separations technology provides enhanced characterization of next generation biotherapeutics and will allow doctors and researchers to better understand diseases by accelerating the identification and validation of biomarkers.

The R&D Manager will be responsible for leading technology projects and managing personnel within MOBILion Systems’ research and development department. The R&D Manager will manage the efforts of scientists and engineers to drive execution of the tactical R&D initiatives leveraging MOBILion’s ion mobility, mass spectrometry, and engineering subject matter expertise to inform directional guidance on projects. This role will provide technical oversight of activities related to identifying, researching, implementing, and de-risking technologies and software tools to be incorporated into MOBILion products.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of leading teams to develop technical concepts into commercially viable prototypes. The R&D Manager will work closely with Project Managers and the engineering team to ensure successful and timely execution of product development activities.

External Communication for Co-development projects



  • Lead a small team of technical individual contributors to develop, de-risk, and prove out new technologies and designs based on milestones identified by senior management
  • Provide technical and scientific guidance to the technical team to complete project milestones
  • Develop and manage operational initiatives to deliver tactical results
  • Provide schedule and cost inputs to the development of project plans
  • Understand the ion mobility and mass spectrometry technology spaces and how these technologies can be leveraged to provide solutions in various applications
  • Interface with senior management and other business units to represent the interests of the R&D team
  • Organize R&D team activities, providing report outs on progress and issues on a regular basis
  • Attend key conferences to develop an industry presence and to stay current with competitive technology development
  • Translate functional plans into operational processes and guide execution of those activities
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards and practices

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or related science field or 8-10 years’ experience in a product development role in the mass spectrometry or related instrumentation market.
  • Demonstrated track record of executing a product development plan from rudimentary lab prototype to commercial launch.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage technical teams to achieve business milestones
  • Able to manage medium to large projects with minimal guidance (project management)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to communicate ideas, designs, and results to internal and external stakeholders
  • Commercial mass spectrometry development experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively in front of company clients
  • Understanding of how various mass spectrometry systems operate (i.e. Quadrupole, QTOF, QQQ, Orbitrap, etc.)
  • Understanding of ion mobility separation principles
  • Initiate, direct, and execute scientific research with an emphasis on developing next generation SLIM technology, trade secrets and intellectual property
  • Demonstrated impact on the scientific community and market via patents, publications, and conference presentations
  • Ability to work within the United States
  • Willing to relocate to the Chadds Ford, PA region

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience with SIMION ion trajectory modeling
  • Experience defining requirements and design inputs for mass spectrometry control/data acquisition/data processing software
  • Experience solving complex data analysis and visualization problems through algorithm development
  • Familiarity with typical software development practices and tools
  • Understanding of market/application spaces relevant to MOBILion’s development roadmap, e.g. biopharma characterization and development, clinical diagnostics
  • Previous management experience in an R&D or product development environment
  • Proven track record developing conceptual and analytical models of ion manipulation hardware
